  • 1.5 g, ¼ tsp
    Salt
  • 0.25 g, Black Pepper
    Black Pepper
  • 4 g, ¼ tbsp, for toasting the bun
    Olive Oil or Butter
Directions
  • Prepare the Patty

Shape the 113g of ground beef into a ½-inch thick patty, slightly wider than the bun (it shrinks during cooking).
Make a small indentation in the center to prevent puffing.
Season both sides with ¼ tsp salt and ⅛ tsp black pepper. Let sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes.

  • Prep the Toppings

Wash and dry 1 lettuce leaf.
    Slice ¼ of a large tomato into a ¼-inch thick round (1 slice, ~38g).
Slice ¼ of a small red onion thinly (1-2 slices, ~12.5g).
Set out 2-3 pickle slices, 1 tbsp ketchup, ½ tbsp mustard, and 1 tbsp mayonnaise.

  • Toast the Bun

Heat a skillet or grill over medium heat with ¼ tbsp olive oil or butter.
Toast the bun halves cut-side down for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Set aside.

  • Cook the Patty

Grill Method: Preheat grill to medium-high (400°F/204°C). Lightly oil the grates. Cook the patty for 3-4 minutes per side (160°F/71°C internal temperature for medium).
Skillet Method: Heat a small cast-iron skillet over medium-high with a touch of oil. Cook the patty for 3-4 minutes per side.
Add 1 slice of cheddar cheese during the last minute of cooking, covering the skillet to melt the cheese.

  • Assemble the Burger

Spread 1 tbsp mayonnaise on the bottom bun.
Add the lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and onion slices.
Place the cooked patty with melted cheese on top.
Add 2-3 pickle slices, then spread 1 tbsp ketchup and ½ tbsp mustard on the top bun.
Place the top bun on and press gently.

  • Serve

Serve immediately with a side like fries, chips, or a small salad.

  • Cooking Tips

Don’t overwork the beef to keep the patty tender.
Use a meat thermometer to ensure the patty reaches 160°F/71°C (USDA recommendation for ground beef).
Customize with extras like a slice of bacon or avocado if desired (adjust nutrition accordingly).

The hamburger is one of the most iconic and beloved foods in America. It consists of a ground beef patty served between two slices of a bun, typically accompanied by toppings such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, cheese, and condiments like ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise. Though its exact origins are debated, the hamburger rose to prominence in the early 20th century and quickly became a symbol of American culture. Its popularity spread rapidly through diners, fast-food chains, and backyard barbecues, making it a staple in households and restaurants alike. The beauty of the hamburger lies in its versatility—it can be customized endlessly to suit different tastes, from classic cheeseburgers to gourmet creations and vegetarian versions. Over time, it has gained worldwide appeal, with many countries creating their own local twists on this American favorite. Beyond its rich flavor and satisfying texture, the hamburger also holds emotional and social significance, often associated with comfort, tradition, and shared experiences. Despite evolving food trends, the classic hamburger remains a timeless dish that continues to bring people together around the table.

The classic American hamburger is more than just a sandwich — it’s a symbol of American culture, tradition, and comfort. From backyard barbecues to iconic diners and fast-food chains, the hamburger has earned its spot as one of the most beloved meals in the United States.

At its core, a hamburger consists of a grilled ground beef patty nestled inside a soft, lightly toasted bun. The beauty of the classic burger lies in its simplicity, enhanced by a perfect balance of fresh toppings and savory condiments. A typical American hamburger features crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, crunchy pickles, and raw or grilled onions. Ketchup, mustard, and sometimes mayonnaise add a tangy punch that completes the flavor profile.

The origin of the hamburger is often debated, but most agree that it gained popularity in the early 20th century with the rise of roadside diners and fast-food establishments. What started as a quick and affordable meal has evolved into a culinary staple, with endless regional and gourmet variations. Yet, the classic hamburger remains a favorite for its nostalgic taste and universal appeal.

One of the reasons for the hamburger’s enduring popularity is its versatility. It can be easily customized to suit personal preferences—whether it’s switching to a brioche or sesame seed bun, adding a slice of American or cheddar cheese, or including extras like bacon or fried eggs. Even plant-based eaters can enjoy a delicious burger with the rise of meat-free patties made from beans, soy, or mushrooms.

A homemade classic hamburger is simple to make. Season a beef patty with salt and pepper, grill or pan-fry it until it reaches your desired doneness, and toast the bun lightly in butter. Assemble with fresh toppings, and you have a satisfying, hearty meal that’s ready in minutes.

Beyond its taste, the hamburger also represents a shared experience. It’s the centerpiece at summer cookouts, the go-to order at casual restaurants, and a nostalgic reminder of family dinners or road trips.

In a world of ever-evolving food trends, the classic American hamburger stands tall—timeless, comforting, and always delicious. Whether you’re a purist or like to get creative with toppings, one thing is certain: the hamburger will never go out of style.
